Where were you when the lockdown came down? Physician and screenwriter Roshan Sethi imagines two people on an arranged date being forced to settle in together. Conservative Ravi (Karan Soni who co-wrote with Sethi) and rebellious Rita (Geraldine Viswanathan) must meet. Ravi because his Indian parents made the arrangements and the shy young man wants to get married. Rita is polite, but doing this only out of obligation. She’s an artist who lives in an apartment compliments of her parents. These awkward dates are part of Rita’s rental agreement. 

As the COVID-19 shelter-in-place mandate comes down, forcing Ravi to spend the night at Rita’s place. Rita’s polite first-date facade crumbles. The supposed vegetarian non-drinker loves fried chicken and beer for breakfast isn’t out of the question. She also has a love interest, but this unseen man is married. 

Sethi sounds like an Asian American mother’s dream son or son-in-law. He’s working at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and while he was a student at Harvard Medical School, he co-created Fox’s “The Resident” while he was finishing his residency. He co-wrote a mini series and a film.

As a film, “7 Days” isn’t deep nor richly textured. It feels like a trifle done while passing time under curious circumstances. Perhaps some day someone will study films made during the pandemic, where crews and cast had to deal with numerous limitations. There may even be true stories where people are forced to become temporary roommates during the pandemic. For Ravi and Rita, they are forced to face truths about each other and themselves and Soni and Sethi’s script doesn’t follow the trope of the conservative being freed up to really live. Ravi and Rita meet somewhere in between, with Rita realizing her self-destructive rebellious ways aren’t working and Ravi considering stepping out of his comfort zone.
